An appropriate amount of rust in tank?

Is there an amount of rust that is okay to have in your tank? I guess it's the kind of thing you should fix before it gets worse? I've siphoned out most of the gas and it looks very clean, but there are just the tiniest amount of rust spots in there, so I'm gonna go ahead and clean it.

^Stupid question, I know no amount of rust is okay, I think what I'm really trying to ask is does the tank keep getting more rusty with regular use? I'm doing the CLR+BB trick as we speak. I'll post some before/after when I'm done.

If you know you have rust in your tank, you certainly need a fine enough inline filter. The lifetime of this inline filter strongly depends on the amount of rust that it has to catch.

Thanks Volker, I've gotten the rust out, and I do have an inline filter between the tank and carbs. I'll be asking more, less stupid questions in the future (probably about my rapidly draining battery)

Hey, when de-rusting a tank, how did you guys seal the top? Did y'all just use the fuel cap? I'm worried that the acidic de-rusting compound may hurt the rubber/vent holes

You can normally tape off the neck of the tank with duct tape, or use a rubber stopper.

Once you have the tank cleaned, and flushed. Pour a pint of ATF in. and coat the inside to keep it from rusting again. Then keep the tank full, and you should not have a rust problem again.
