Hello and Introduction...

Postby cheezmonta » Mon Jun 10, 2013 11:30 pm

Greetings from the new guy!
A little about myself, my background and what brought me here...

A number of years ago my dad and I decided to go learn how to ride motorcycles together. Half as a bonding experience and half to piss off my mom his (ex-wife).

I picked up an '85 CB650 Nighthawk I saw at a local dealer for probably way more than it was worth. It was a good starter bike, easy to ride, reliable and cheap to maintain.
I used it as my summertime commuter mostly. Daily rode in the sun and occasional rain. Worst ever was a late Winter. I didn't get out of work till around 11pm and by then it was around 40 with a few snow flakes.
After a couple years of riding through town to work and having 2-3 near death experiences a week I parked it as a weekend toy. The toy became a driveway ornament. The driveway ornament was eventually sold.

Skip ahead to a few weeks ago and a good coworker/friend of mine who knows I've been wrenching most of my life swings by and asks if I want to help him strip down his bikes to sell for parts.
I ask what kind of bikes and he says "a couple of old '79 CB650's".
My jaw hit the floor and I said "you don't part bikes like that out. They're old school cool, nearly vintage!"

He explained one ran the other was for parts. He parked them about 3 years ago and just never got around to them again. Meanwhile his wife wanted her garage space back so the bikes had to go.
Cash is tight lately and I told him I would love to buy them if I could; To which he exclaimed. "Tell you what... If your going to fix it up and can get them outta my place, they're yours"...

So here I am back in the CB650 world.
A little older, wiser and with 2 free bikes to tinker with.

They're definitely in need of some work but for free I'm not complaining.

Now to decide which style to build as...
Cafe, bobber or street fighter.

Thanks.
I'm actually pretty new to working on Bikes beyond basic maintenance.
Stick me in front of a Nissan engine and I can rebuild it blindfolded. Working on bikes will be a nice change of pace and opportunity to expand my experience. :D
