Identifying between CV & PV Carbs...

Postby lewiszman » Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:40 am

Hi there

I bought a 1979 CB650. I know that stock, this bike should have piston valve carburators... but I'm not sure if the previous owner(s) replaced the carbs.

The reason I am concerned is because, on this link:
http://www.myhonda650.com/cb650history.htm under "CARBURETOR IDENTIFICATION" it shows the PV carbs should have a long shaped cover on top (sorry don't know the technical name), while the constant velocity carbs have a circular cover on top. The ones on my bike are circular.

My question is... is the information on the above link accurate and complete. And if so, then I must have a set of CV carbs off another CB650 year - how can I accurately identify them?

Thanks!
Lewis

Nevermind, some more searching led me to this link which identifies vintage Honda carbs. Here's the link if anyone else ever needs it:

Most likely swapped heads to unless they got creative with the intakes.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

I didnt know heads were swappable like that... Now here's something interesting... I cross-referenced my carb casting numbers (VB 44D[A]TK) with the list in the link above... There isn't a match.

81-82 CB650/C VB44A 4 15.5 120 35 NA
82 CB650SC VB44C 4 15.5 118 35 NA

I'm guessing that my carbs is either a VB 44A (and not the D right after the numbers) or it may be from an import market?

Anyone know the next step to ID'ing these carbs?

Welcome here, Lewis! :D

So basically you have CV carbs. There are some differences, e.g. the idle jets of VB44A/B are pressed in while for VB44C (1982) they are screwed.

From your label it should be really VB44D but no idea which model had them.

I have a cousin who recently moved to the Denver area so I plan on cruising out there some time this summer/fall. The western KS scenery is pretty spartan so CO may well be a more interesting trip.

Then again, I had planned on being there for the relay this year, too.

Turns out the motor is actually from a 82 CB650SC. This thing is full of suprises. I'll try to get a pic of the carbs up sometime soon.

So the engine should be black.

That's right. Which is a little bit relieving since it's SLIGHTLY easier to find parts for an 82 than a 79 I've noticed.
