Oil cooler on 650Z?

Postby mojoblues » Wed Oct 16, 2013 6:00 am

I'm in the process of buying a second bike - I need the engine.
Anyway, I'm in contact with one of the sellers, 600km from me, so I have asked more info and more photos of the bike. It's european model 650Z like mine, but on the photo of the engine, it has oil cooler (owner says it was for the US market).
I wasn't aware of models that had oil coolers on, since it's basically same engine whatever the frame was (custom, standard or else).
Can anybody shed some light on it for me, please?

There was a aftermarket cooler for then. I had a duralle (sp). Think lockhart did too. Heard the dohc650 coolers fit without to much trouble too.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

The CB650 SOHC did not come with an oil cooler.
The only reasonable way I am aware of how to attach it, is by an adaptor plate beneath the oil filter housing.

The 650 engines you can use have either engine numbers starting RC03E or RC08E. Something simple to ask for if you are in doubt.

Note that 79-80 and 81-82 engines have different cylinder heads. The intake spacing is different for CV and for PD carbs, but that's it. They just swap, no problem. As long as your own head is all right, I would not bother just because of that. But it might be an issue if you have to pay a mechanic to do the swap. Then better get the carbs with the engine, too.

The RC08E (CB650SC or "1982 Nighthawk") engine is black and has only the CV carbs head. Some gears are different, too, but it will fit in the frame.

Volker:
"Note that 79-80 and 81-82 engines have different cylinder heads."
So, if I find a bike that is from '79, its carbs would not be interchangeable with mine ('84)?

The list of available bikes around me has shrank to one from '79 (complete bike), on the photos looks clean and nice, but I can see the wheels have been changed (it has black comstars).
It's not cheap, but I was hoping that the engines are the same so I could get some spare parts or at least learn on the spare one.

Does this difference between engines stops on the carbs, or are they more differences I should be aware of?

The 79 US Z model only had comstars.

European also, but I believe only custom model had black ones - mine has ordinary comstars, and this one has black.

Black comstars with single disk is US model.
Back comstars double disk might be EU 80/81Custom or US 1981 Custom.
Black comstars with slight silver rim and double disk double piston caliper is 1982.

Not many Custom parts fit on a Z-model.
I had a Custom and the crashed bike I bought for the engine was a "Z". I sold almost everything except engine, carbs and electrics stuff.

The carb intake spacing is different. Best is if you use the carbs of the bike, too.
I think throttle cables are a bit different, too.

One may fit the CV carbs on a 79/80 head using cranked carb boots: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=722
No idea if there exists an option for the PD's on a 81/82 head.

A picture of your bike and also of the bike you want to get might be helpful.

Ok, I hope I'm not posting too much, I just figured it out how to post a picture - it has to be max 600px and light ( 200kb). :D

Just to clarify, the blue one is not the one with the oil cooler, I gave up on that one.
Anyway, here is the pic of the engine with the oil cooler, if you are interested

Your bike looks like a usual Z-model with different seat and turn signals.
It has the 1980 fork and PD piston carbs (and cylinder head).

The blue one looks like a Z-model with black comstars. If the rear should be 18" it would be the first one I am aware of.
Short fork with double disk (larger disk diameter than your silver comstar Z-model disks!) black comstars would be also quite unique although probably feasible from two forks (Z-model, 1980 European Custom).
These carbs are neither the stock piston carbs nor the stock CV carbs! But they look like CV carbs. And the carbs to airbox boots look not stock.
So quite difficult to say what you really have there.
But it does not look bad.
