1980 CB650 (Factory) Custom
Hey guys,
I bought a 1980 CB650C, with 7000 miles. It has been parked for the last 30 years, and is 100% original. I was looking for a bit of advice/guidance.
1) What is your opinion on the value of the bike?
2) Any recommendations for a reputable person/shop near Minneapolis to get the bike up and running? I have zero experience with bikes and will need assistance at some point
Thank you in advance. Pic below...

Welcome. that is a good looking Bike.
I just bought a running bike, but leaking everywhere for 400 and have another that I have $5000 in and still going.
Both are same year and Color as Yours. they are nice bikes but if you have a shop do all the work it will cost Plenty.
More Than the bike is worth.
Value can only be determined by you.
What did you pay for it?
Much help this site, do as much yourself as possible.
Some suggested items to pay for:
1) Professional Carburetor Sonic Cleaning ( money well spent)
2) Safety Inspection after you have Bike cleaned and Made Operational again.( Quick trip to shop for swing arm bushing, wheel bearings, brake Inspect)
3) Necessary Machine Work that you may find, if any.
4) Tires
Normally what is need is a complete fuel system cleaning, which is time consuming but a MUST DO.
Battery Replace and Wire Harness Clean Up.
So Fuel and Electrical Clean Up! Basic Really Just Standard Tune up Procedures.
Clean, Inspect, Test and Repair and Ride.
DO IT YOURSELF and SAVE

Like usbear said: Do it yourself! One trip to a "professional" mechanic and you've spent more than you probably paid for the bike.

looks good. get a manual and read up on it. They arent that hard to work on.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: 1980 CB650 (Factory) Custom
Thanks for the replies!
I payed $850 and kind of helped the guy out of a jam. Probably too much, huh?
No worries, its the price of a scooter and a lot more fun. It'll be a good experience to learn the bike and get her running again!

Not too much!
So I always forget to mention that a good relationship with a Local shop or Mechanic is Highly desirable and worthwhile pursuit. I buy and order through my local Honda Dealer and they give me many useful items that are headed to the discard pile.
They are Priceless when you find one.
Much can be saved by doing the clean up stuff yourself, and if you wish to have someone else do the Heavy Lifting then you can at least get the basic stuff out of the way Before handing it over.
I sometimes forget How many Good Honest and Reputable shops exist but for one Good one there are Many Bad ones and asking for a Reference was and is a good place to start.
I saw a guy pay 3500 for one this year that was not running because he wanted one when he was a Kid and could not afford it then. It was clean and had been onside but needed to be gone through.
How many tanks of fuel in a car or truck would it take to pay for the Bike?
Not Many!
How much fun to be had in the restore process and the Riding after?
Priceless as they say!
Just Dive In and see where it takes you!

Re: 1980 CB650 (Factory) Custom
that's a really nice find! I got mine a little more than what you have paid for but yours is much cleaner and better looking. I am on the other side of the planet so I can't complain with the amount and the looks. Its currently under rebuild and in pieces but it will soon hit the road probably early next year if all comes along nicely.
like what most suggested here. fix it yourself. it will save you more and the learning experience is priceless! the amount you will pay for the mechanic maybe a little more or less than what you would need to get the right tools for the job. its a good investment too for future projects.
welcome here!

Thanks all! I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I am definitely going to get to work on the bike in the comfort of my own garage. Stoked!

Welcome here!
Great bike!
Some parts in the airbox region seem missing, so check it out. Stock piston carbs will need the stock air system to run properly.
But first verify if your tank is that clean inside, too.
As soon as it runs: don't ride with that 30 year old, rock hard tyres!

Re: 1980 CB650 (Factory) Custom
Sweet bike!! I have the exact same bike same situation. Mine has 5400 miles on it and has been sitting in a garage for 24 years. Me and my MC mechanic friend started it up up for the first time 2 weeks ago. Im still cleaning out the gas tank, carbs are rebuilt and need to be synced. Ordering new tires for her this week. My neighbor gave it to me and now I am doing some work on his house for him.
