Starting from scratch :) tank&petcock questions

Postby mojoblues » Sat Nov 30, 2013 7:47 am

OK, so I have decided to take my bike from a mechanic (third one) after nobody would take repairs on it seriously. I will try to do it myself
I need to dig into the engine, 'cause my distribution chain (cam chain) spins but not much else (was told I need a new tensioner but nobody opened it).
I have decided to make an effort and do what I can to fix this bike, so I have started with tank and next are carbs.
So, PO said that tank was cleaned and coated inside to prevent rust but I don't know how to verify this - on the pic you can see rust marks that seem to really be coated on with some kind of emulsion. I wanted to clean the tank from inside with vinegar+chain, but maybe it is not needed or even would damage the coating. I did, however, find a broken filter inside a tank, and from a a petcock hole gunk was coming out (looks more like plastic than rust).
How can I make sure if it's coated?
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention, I know almost nothing about bikes  but hopefully will soon

Another thing:
I'll need that filter replaced, but the petcock needs sorting out as well - at the "ON" position fuel flows, at the"STOP" it leaks a bit (tried blowing into it) and at "RES" nothing comes out.
I want to open it, but how do I open the rivets that are on the front face?? No screws.

It sounds like someone coated the tank without properly removing the rust and etching the tank. The rust then continues to do it's thing under the coating. Eventually the coating is compromised. If you click the link in my signature, there is some tank cleaning information in there.

Some people have rebuilt their petcocks by drilling out the rivets. I'm not aware of a rebuild kit for them.

Good luck!

For the tank: I guess it would take some chemicals to dissolve that coating, right? In that case I might leave it for a while, since I can't do it on my own (I'm working from a borrowed garage, bringing pieces to my apartment). Will flush it few times to get the hard stuff out.
Petcock: I drilled the rivets out :x and opened the petcock, the same stuff was inside, so I cleaned it. Will get pair of small bolts to close it again (none around)
This is "petcock unriveted" :)

Looks like it's in pretty good shape!

Sorry, I don't have any good suggestions for getting the old liner out.

The flip cap on the tank shows it to be a 79 tank.

That tank does not look to me that it has been coated. The spots on the tunnel would not show if it has been. The stuff left in the petcock opening looks to be the remains of the flange that should be on the bottom of that plastic filter tube (in tank screen). Also the rubber o-ring that seals the petcock to the tank is missing. Those pieces are no longer available seperate from the petcock.

Your only option is to locate a replacement petcock. A new one is still available through your local honda dealer.

edit: incorrect part# removed

MiGhost, I've left the tank to dry out for a day, there is something on top of those rust marks, some kind of coating, I cannot feel the difference when I pass over it with my finger.
And yes, the rubber between petcock and the tank is gone into pieces, I hope I can find something not original to put there. Another thing is that filter, but I might try to put only inline filter between petcock and carbs if I can't find a original filter.

Thanks for the petcock inside picture.
Looks still great inside, it may be closed again just with bolts.
The reserve tube looks too short.
The filter is too coarse for the small stuff anyway but you need a clean tank if you want to go without it and use an inline filter instead. No problem then I think.

Note that this is no '79 but a European Z-model. Probably a late one so the '79 petcock thread of that part# above won't fit!

How long should the reserve tube be?
I think whoever did a job on the tank, didn't do a proper job, with coating the tank and also damaged a petcock filter. I will try to do without the filter on the petcock and just use the inline filter. Later on, I might try to find replacement or something.

I will clean carbs and flush out the tank, but my biggest worry is cam chain and tensioner, I need to get inside today to see what's going on there.

I think the tube should be about at least half the height of the filter screen. Can try to measure as my tank is empty now. :(

For the tensioner, here is what you really should take care:

Thanks for the link Volker, I've seen it already. Not much clearer what I need to do, but I will not know until I open it.
My problem is that I surely do not know what am I doing, so I will be taking a lot of photos and will come back here - with a lot of questions

This may be problematic. What you need for sure is a small enought torque wrench. Reading through the corresponding manual section completely before even go to the bike is a good idea!

BTW: I measured the fuel tube, it is 85mm from the top rim of the nut. Custom tank/petcock however.
