More parts need indentified!
Re: More parts need indentified!
Hard to tell (for me) from your picture. I think I see the eight seals for the valve stems in the bottom right of your circled area. The large rings look like #9 below (illustration only. not an actual CB650 head):

I think the "green" thin ones are the rocker shaft seals. Thought there was only 4 though. Only ever had to replace 2 and that was a long time ago.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: More parts need indentified!
Thanks for the replies, I figured those big O-rings went under the cylinders but I felt that they would just get in the way of a tight fit, so I didn't throw them on. I will let you guys know how that goes. haha
Re: More parts need indentified!
there is a little undercut in the sleeve it fits in.

Re: More parts need indentified!
how do you think it will end up without them?
Re: More parts need indentified!
A quote from another forum on this very topic (you are not alone):
I can tell you from my own experience you will have an oil leak on your hands if you removed the old o-rings and did not replace with new.

The ones on the bottom are not as critical but if your there change them.

Another person weighed in on that same thread and said that person was speaking of different rings. As you said, these are not as crucial.

I remember a CB500 guy reporting that his bike smoked considerably without these O-rings (#9 in picture above).

Re: More parts need indentified!
Starting from lower right counterclockwise
8 black valve stem seals
8 gray/green valve guide O-RING (10X1.6)
2 tiny O-RING (5X2.4) oil supply passage top of cylinder (The ones that leak)
3 med O-RING (11X2.5) 2-oil supply passage bottom of cylinder, 1-tach drive housing seal
4 med O-RING (9X1.6) rocker shaft o-ring
4 large O-RING (61.8X2.0) cylinder base o-ring.
The smoke would be from the base gasket leaking oil onto the exhaust if the o-rings were not replaced.

Guess the last one was part of the original question.

Perhaps one should note that one does not pull the guides just to replace the seals!

Thanks! Im gonna see how it goes as i already have it about ready too go and I need too finish the wiring so as soon as she fires up ill go back down if its necessary
Re: More parts need indentified!
Supposedly, those rings do not come out easy. If they were removed when you took the engine apart originally, you would have REMEMBERED removing them. And as long as you did not damage them excessively, you should be OK.
