Fork Cap Bolts

Postby CanCB650 » Wed May 07, 2014 8:58 pm

Hello all!

Having newly acquired a 1979 CB650 I've been steadily working at rebuilding it over the winter. Without getting into too much detail in this particular post i've come to refilling the forks fluid. As with a few other components on the bike the previous over/whoever worked on it last overtightened many of the components stripped/damaging many of the threads and OEM bolts. One of these many overtightened components were the fork cap bolts. Once finally removed I was able to see that the thread on the right fork cap bolt had been damaged. I am now looking to replace it. Having visited my local go-to bike shop here in Toronto, Canada with no luck I thought I would turn to you kind folks on the inter web for suggestions on where a replacement can be ordered or sourced.

While on the topic of forks, I was also semi wanting to replace the forks with one of an upside-down variety. With minimal other changes to the front end of the bike I was curious if anyone happened to have an insight on the best model(s) to keep an eye out for.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Please be kind in your replies as i'm fairly new to the forums.

Thank you for the welcome!

I checked http://www.cmsnl.com/ but the part was listed as unavailable. Correctly, or incorrectly I assumed that meant they no longer stocked the item. But I'll be sure to keep an eye for it to come back into stock.

Does anyone know if one of the more popular (ie. CB550/CB750 fork cap bolts may fit?

Thank you for the the replies so far!

Also, any insight on the upside-down for replacements?

Cheers

It's looking like that part, 51454-422-003 BOLT, FR. FORK, is obsolete. The good news is that same part number was used on many other bikes. That should be helpful for finding a set on Ebay or similar sites.

You are incredible. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that insight Folsoml! Thats outstanding, thank you very very much.

I'll but sure to look into those options and find a match this weekend. As soon as I can confirm a fit i'll be sure to report back for the community's future reference.

The GSXR seems to be the favored setup.
This will get you started.
