8)

Heres my 1981 CB650c
She has 13,548 Miles
At the moment Im replacing the starter relay & Battery Cables.
I have an oil leak
Currently shes running lean, so im gonna have the carbs rebuilt and cleaned. Ive read that the 82 carbs come with removable idle jets so im gonna look into changing this.

Future Plans: I dont wanna chop her up. ill change up somethings but keep all her parts in a box.
New Bars
New Seat
Exhaust
Lights
Oil cooler

At the moment
Small oil leak

Changed out the 55/60w bulb to a 35/35w bulb
Changed the spark plugs out (D8EA). Turns out the old plugs weren't the specific d8ea
Cylinder number 3 the plug was black I'll post a picture
And 1, 2, & 4 look lean.

Number 3 cylinder small misfire around 3k 4k rpm.

Unsure if head was removed or not. Cleaned up the engine the other day, but can't seem to figure where the oil is coming from.

How difficult would it be to remove the head?
To change valve seals?
O rings?

This is my first bike, but I have some mechanical skill from working on cars.
Such as changing clutch flywheel and timing belt.

She runs great fires up every time, on cold with choke up. After warming she hold idle, very little white smoke from cylinder 3. Isn't constant.
Idle is at 1k rpm
At idle if open throttle to quickly she will bog and stall out, happens rarely.
Gradually open throttle she rev up to 9k no problem.
Again she has 13k miles I'm sure maintenance and tune up will do her well.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Note: I removed your spark plug picture as it was HUGE. If you need to repost, resize it to about 640X480. Thanks, Folsoml

How should i go about this;
What would be an easy and effective way to clean the pistion heads with the jugs on? or should i just remove the jugs too and do it all (piston rings)?
What else should i do?

What else should I be doing?
Any pointers, key tips i should know about? Tell me everything i should know. I can use all the help i can get.

Nice set up! Looks like you've got it all planned out!

How was everything before you disassembled it? Was the charging system ok?

It's ok to clean off the pistons in the jugs; hold the timing chain tight and just keep turning over til each one is at the top then go to it.

Charging system works.
She ran great slight mid fire cylinder 3. Little oil was seeping in. No smoke, took her up to top speed.

I was planning to keep the jugs in because the bottom gasket didn't leak but I'm thinking of removing it to check the piston rings. But after I remove the jugs I'll have to make sure I install the tensioner properly from the other thread I was reading.

Thoughts?

What does the wall of #3 look like? If they look good and same as others no reason to go any further.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

UPDATE

ok so i took my cylinder head to a local shop to get the valves checked, lapped, and cleaned. they quoted me 245. and to replace the seals 45 dollars.
im on a budget so i decided to do the cleaning and lapping myself just need to get some tools together to get the valves out.
input?

Pretty much anything you try to pay someone else to do for you is going to quickly become more expensive than the bike itself.

Did you happen to do a compression check before you tore it down? If all 4 were near 135-140 you probably won't benefit much from doing the rings. Mine were all around that range dry, and jumped up to 180 when I shot a tablespoon of oil in the cylinder and ran the test again. You should be able to get a whole lot more miles out of the original rings--I would think 40k miles plus.

The problem with bogging on a quick snap of the throttle may be the advancer. Once I got mine cleaned and properly lubed it completely changed the performance of the bike.

I get a black #3 plug every time too and I keep reading the same from others. Still haven't figured that one out.

Looks like you're on the right track! Appreciate the pictures--keep us up to date.
