What happens when the OKI CDI goes bad?

Postby coffee_brake » Wed Jul 30, 2014 9:20 pm

I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Mine aren't gooey but (as most of you probably already know), the bike starts fine, idles fine, pulls like a freight train all the way to 5.5k RPMs, where it begins to miss and/or bog, and will not go more than 55 mph in any gear.
When in neutral, it revs all the way to red-line.

I've been going through the ignition system and found nothing wrong. Just wondering about those CDI units.

BTW, a quick Google search shows an inexpensive replacement:

Please don't flame if this is old information, or if I missed something obvious. I really did do several searches!

The CDI is an electronic unit. It either works, or not. No middle ground. If you are firing on all 4. The CDI's are good.

Good. The CDI on the Honda CX500s I've rebuilt can go bad an not allow the bike to rev high. I was hoping that wasn't the case here.

As stated the CDI works good or not at all. Your problem seems to me be in the carbs. I still have my Honda cb 250n and it wouldnt run good at high revs under load when i got that bike. It later discovered that the main jets was a bit to big so i replaced them with a number smaller and the bike ran fantastic after that. So my tip is to check if the sparkplugs are'nt a bit sooty or something. I do think your problem is in the carbs and not the CDIs.

Me too, I agree.

I can clean carbs but I'm not a tuner. I'll have to pull the carbs again anyway, and then I can check the main jet number.

I don't see how too big could cause this (see? I don't know how to tune carbs), but if that's what was wrong with yours, I bet I have the same issue.
Thanks for sharing, I'll be all over this next.

Well as i said it was so on my cb 250n, to be real certain you need to check if the sparkplugs seems a bit darken by soot. If they are the main jets can be to large. You may need to check the float level too. If it's the CDIs thats faulty you should have trouble to get the engine to work properly at any rpm so i rather think it's in the carbs the problem is!

Plugs are white. Not tan, white.

That is an indication that it is something wrong with the carbs. The engine dont get enough of fuel to really rev trough at load. You really need to check the carbs and probably loock for clogged jets. Do you have a manual?

I have downloaded the manual, thanks.

I think it's carbs too, but I sure don't know what. I'd guess floats, but they're not adjustable. Flow is good, carbs went through the ultrasonic cleaner till nothing at all was coming out of air or fuel passageways.

Since I had done what seemed to be everything there was to do with carbs, I moved on to spark.

Since that seems to be good, I'm back at carbs, but not sure what else to do.

Have you check the timing advancer yet? I can't remember if you have.
If not. clean, and lubricate it.

What plugs are you running? It may be a simple matter of the wrong heat range plug.

spark advancer is in good working order, and new plugs...uh, whatever the book says ( can't recall ATT).
