83 650 steering stem

Postby karben » Thu Jun 18, 2015 8:56 am

So I've got a feeling my wobble comes from a loose stem bearing. My question is what bolt am I tightening here? The one in the top of the triple tree? It's just underneath the middle of the handlebars. Or is there a different bolt I need to be tightening? I believe it's a 32mm nut.

I believe I'm talking about #14 on this diagram. Thanks!

To tighten up a sloppy stem, you need to tighten #15 on this diagram.

You will need to remove the upper fork bridge to get to it.

Thank you. What is that type of ratchet called and do you have any idea what size it would be?

A special socket is required for this--Honda part 07716-0020400. It looks something like this:

This one is two sided to act as the clutch nut tool as well. If you are like most people I know, you will make such a socket out of a regular socket and an angle grinder.

I do not have an angle grinder. I could probably score a file from my dad but what's 25 bucks on a socket? If it'll save me 2 hours of grinding. I would definitely "make" one if I could but it's just not feasible at this point in time. Are those the correct dimensions of the socket I'm looking for? Looks like 26x30 mm. I have a Sears nearby and they sell all sorts of these four prong do dads. I just need to be 100% on the size so I'm not running around like an idiot all evening

Can I use the "c-spanner" that came in my toolkit to tighten this locking nut?

I don't know if it would work or not. It's worth a try. You may be able to tighten it with your hand.
