79 cb650 camshaft & rocker arm model compatibility???

Postby izzo_artistry » Tue Aug 25, 2015 1:30 am

In the last week i had a local mechanic look at my bike after taking off the seals he noticed rocker arm & cam shaft wear. I guess i found the cause of the "ticking" noise when the motor runs hot.

Take a look at the pics and let me know how bad it is & if its worth replacing those peices, get just the rocker arms, or just the cam, or just getting a new motor all together.... Keep in mind im on a sctrict budget as well, and this is my only means of transportation.

If it is worth it, I've been looking online for another camshaft that will fit, i havent found my exact same model camshaft, which model camshafts & rocker arms are interchangeable? Let me know thanks.

All years of the CB650 and CB650C used the same cam and rocker arm--as did the 82 Nighthawk 650. No other bikes used the same parts.

The only models i can find are the cb650, 650sc in the 83-85 models. Are those year models compatible as well?

There was no CB650 after 1982, only the CB650SC (Nighthawk). 83-85 are DOHC models. Completely different setup.

I've heard the 650 camshaft works as a racing upgrade on the 550's. That means their camshaft would be a downgrade though... If the bike still runs...

This does make me wonder if the rocker arms are interchangeable though. I know someone did an article on 550 vs 650 motor parts. There was a fair bit that you could potentially swap.

Damn that sucks. Called a few local honda shops & they don't make cam shafts for my particular model anymore. Guess i'd better dig deep.

Hello!

Bob here.
I can not read your posts because pics are too big.
Others may have answered already.

Rockers are shot but can be resurfaced and chromed for $50 each. don,t throw them away, they are usable as cores for rebuilds and you can get core price out of them. Same with cam about 30 to 50 dollars cam core depending on damage.

I have some good rockers in the Shop in Chico Ca. and some good serviceable cams if you don,t find any.
Some members here part out bikes and have cams available from time to time.
Replace rockers when replacing cam or it will grind lobes down quickly.

Make sure your rocker surfaces have good Smooth surfaces as these are plated and will grind your replacement cam lobes off in short order(minutes).

I have been out fighting fires with equipment and have not been on site much recently. What part of the world are you located in?

Have a Good one.

I live in Minnesota. I just recenty bought a used rocker arms and camshaft valve cover, supposed to be in spec & looks in pretty good shape under 14,000 miles. I still may need a camshaft though. One of my buddies gave me his used one but I'm not sure of the condition of it compared to the one I have now. I may need more info about your shop.
Let me know! Thank you.
