cdi/tpi/ transistorized Kettering system.

whatever it is you want to call it... one of them has gotten warm enough over time all the "black goo" is gone, is there a preferred substance to use and replace the black goo?

Electronics potting compound is what you want. Find one that dissipates heat. All the compound is gone from mine too but they still work fine. I figure if it 'aint broke, don't fix it. :)

I agree but when they are $100 for a used set i'd rather replace what Honda thought was necessary.

They come up on ebay cheaper than that. Some have "refilled" the goo with JB weld and hold up.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

The reason for the potting compound is to insulate the electronics from vibration and moisture. If there is some left coating the electronics, then the compound is probably still doing it's job. Covering the electronics with something so that the igniters look nice could do more harm than good if the proper material is not used. For instance, it could seal heat in rather than dissipating it. It could also eat into the electronics if it combines with the current compound to form an acid. Just some things to think about and research before moving ahead. I've found working igniter sets on eBay for as little as 10 bucks.
