Spoked rims, and how to fix em...
So, I have a pretty bad wheel hop. And my spokes are pretty well corroded. I've tried truing it myself but didn't get very far (the spoke nuts started stripping). So, what are my options? Can I re-lace the rim? Where can I get new spokes? How can I tell if my rim is still good (it looks like it's an up-down motion as well as side-side).
Relacing is an option in theory and will work provided the rim is not cracked or dented on the edge. That is a lot of work. I'd suggest trying to pick up a spare rim to ride on while you fix that one. It could take a while and there is good potential to hose the job and rim. Now where to get spokes for such a ride is the question. They are available for HD's and the like. Perhaps combing JC Whitney catalogues and such.

Is it possible to put a leading axle wheel (like from a custom or SC) onto my center-axle forks? And will I be able to match up the rotor to the brake caliper? I've never really liked the comstar mag wheels, but they're looking more and more attractive from a maintainence standpoint. There are several on Ebay right now, but they're all dual-caliper. Will this cause a problem?
When I was a kid, I switched the hub on my bicycle and relaced the wheel. I got it true, I knew how to do that, but the hub was way off center and when I rode the bike it went up and down like a clown car, LOL. What a pain it was to straighten that out! I did more wheels through my teen years and got better at it, but I don't think I'd mess with one nowadays...especially on a motorcycle. Good luck.
The comstar on my 1980 650c is a single disc.

I agree, if the rim and the hub are ok, it can be relaced.

Ther is a diff in the dual/single disk comstars. Not a big issue though. Its in how the hub placed in the assembly. Only problem created is if you take a dual wheel and put it with a single disk the hub cover on the non disc side wont fit over the rivits.
Also the disks for the duals are thinner than a single.

'Standard axle'... 'leading axle'... 'trailing axle'... I'm confused So I went to the 'Show It Off' thread and did some comparisons and looks like you have the same forks as my '80 Custom. The only set of forks that looked different to me were Rob's on his '81. I'm guessing his are 'leading axle'. Take a look and see what you think.

Yup, I think the only bikes with the leading axle (like rob's, where the axle connection is actually on the front of the forks) are the '81+ custom and SC dual disc setups.
The new mag rim will get here on Friday. We'll see how she matches up. And what the bike will look like with a mag front and spoked back
I've never liked the look of the rear mag rim... Don't know why, it just doesn't seem to aesthetically suit the bike IMO. Going to a mag front is a big leap for me, but I'm just tired of the bumpy ride.

I'm going to de-black my wheels over the winter....I agree with you that the silver ones look really sharp.
