Any tips would be helpful. Right now I am trying to connect the two and having a very difficult time

I've had the best luck when I connect the two before the carbs are fully seated in the head.

Threads on using ratchet straps to pull back the airbox are here somewhere. It keeps from distorting the rubber so much.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

I found a long flat head screwdriver helped get the airbox hooked around the carbs. There should be hose clamps to tighten everything up. I had the airbox in when I put my carbs in. It took a lot of wiggling.

A little Vaseline on the inside lip of the boots helps.

I'm having the same issue. I have a 81 CB650 Custom that im restoring and I found the part on ebay pretty cheap.
