Transmission not working properly

Postby sambrand1 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:03 am

Hey guys, busy with a caferacer/ scrambler/ bratt bike project. Pulled apart every part, even the transmission. Which scares me a bit now, did everything with CB650Z manual next to it. But now I am almost at the end, I seem to have a transmission problem. I made pictures of everything. So maybe you guys can help me figuring out what I did wrong. The strange thing is that in the beginning everything seemed to work normally, unfortunately that is not the case anymore. It seems to go in all gears properly, but 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th its having the same problem, free gear there is no problem. It can't be the cillinders/ startermotor/ crankshaft because the clutch is not installed. Pictures and movies will be added.

It looks as the gear shift is mounted incorrectly, but how i can only say if i could look over your engine personally.

Hmm could be, this is what it looked like before I pulled it apart.

There is some sort of clip in the middle bottom part of the before picture. Two little bars stick out on either side of a rod thing. Don't know what it does, but it's likely there for a reason.

Well of what i can see the centering spring is missing but i cant see if the gear selector mechanism is assembled correctly. And as i said i could help better if i could be there and look over the engine completely. The only thing i can say is there is something blocking like two different gears is locking each other.

Exaktly what manual do you have?

The five cutouts in the shifter drum indicate the positions of your five gears. The gears should be seated properly when the roller from the bottom arm seats in the corresponding cutout.
This should work independently from the remaining parts of the outer shifter mechanism. So the question is: do you have five proper gears when the roller seats inside each of the corresponding cutouts? If yes, it is a problem of the outer shifter mechanism (as e.g. a missing centering spring so the weight of the shifter lever will cause trouble). If not your problem probably cannot be fixed without taking care for the inner shifter mechanism again (which might mean you have to split the case again).

For orientation on gears: the upper arm with the small roller indicates neutral (when it the seats in the smaller additional cutout in the cutout for the 3rd gear). Typically one can find some more "neutral positions" in a CB650 transmission so don't worry.

Volker_P you could explain what i could'nt and your explanation seems quite logical. And as i said i could have figured it out if i only had the engine and gearbox in front of me.

Thanks.
I hope it helped the OP to figure it out, too.
It would be nice to get to know the solution of this case.
