I am working the next several days. The weather is perfect here right now.Soon I hope to get back on this project.I have a seat coming via ebay.I bought a new seat lock.I bought a new kickstand rubber foot,I bought a used master cylinder, caliper, lever for the front brakes.I bought the front caliper rebuild kit-consists of like 2 rubber seals.I havent checked wear dates on parts bikes tires, but the front one on one of them looks almost new.It and the wheel will be replacing what I have now.The front wheel, tire, front brakes should be aok after this.I am going to remove the rear wheel.its tire is slick. The drum brake pads I think are frozen stuck inside the wheel.I have one rear wheel and brake set that are working well on a parts bike.Another transplant task. The battery in the bike has been charging for 2 days.Which usually means it is shot. One more expense, but a necessary one.The motor is still locked up.I am going to take it down off the lift, push it,make sure it isnt in gear.if its locked up, then take the valve cover off, investigate. The drain the new oil out I put in.dang.Then take off the covers to the clutch, see if its bound up.And check the primary chain. It could be rusted stiff also.I have seen where most guys replace the primary chain with a masterlink chain.o ring style. It appears that by taking off the primary sprocket, removing the rear wheel, then the rear swingarm the primary chain can be removed intact.I am thinking that would be better than a masterlink chain.Any input appreciated.I have miles and miles to go.Nothing is more important than getting a nonseized motor in the bike.If I am right about the swingarm, then it would be an opportune time to replace swingarm bearings, pack any and all with grease. So far all this is within my capability.I dont have enough time to be in a hurry, and look forward to someday being able to fire it up and ride it.

Help! This motor will not turn over a tall when I put a 24mm socket on the ignition side crank bolt.It turns easily on my other 2 motors.I can roll the bike easily, so not in gear. The front brake caliper is removed, no locked front brake. The rear brake rod assembly is off the drum so no drum brake binding.I took the head cover off. What a PIA that was.37 years of those 8 mm bolts being in place was not easy to get out.But the oil in the motor looks good, the head bolt covers look good, the valve cover gaskets and head cover rubber gaskets look real good.I am not sure what to do next.I suppose remove the head, see if the pistons or rings or both are rusted seized? Should I drain the oil-I replaced it even though the motor isnt running just in case. Then take off the left side engine cover, looked for a jammed up primary chain, or clutch stuck somehow? Soon and helpful input greatly appreciated.

Sorry but I would think this means you will have to open the engine, probably even split the crankcase.
If the rings should be seized to the cylinders, they would damage the piston ring grooves even if you should manage to get them moving again by force.
Possibly soaking with oil through the plug holes can help but I would not be too optimistic.

Guess one could try to open the connection rods at the bottom bearing and put the cylinder block with pistons into a furnace to get things movable again. But this is just an idea, I never tried this.

Take the head off (clean the bolts off good first} and soak the rings with acetone tranny fluid mix.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

Yeah the furnace thing has been suggested. That's nuts.I am not going to set fire to an engine.I did want to set fire to a suzuki and a yamaha one time. The yamaha I finally just gave away. The suzuki I sold for peanuts. But neither of those meant anything to me.This little honda is important to me.I will use auto trans fluid and acetone next.I have already resigned myself to splitting the cases.I can't afford the 675 rebore kit.So hopefully a hone and rering will work.I know an an engine rebuild shop that can use a measurement tool and see if a hone will be enough.I heard those tools are expensive. My other 2 parts bikes have loose engines.I probably will wind up using one of those.

If you have a decent drill any cheap hone will work. Someone to hold the cyl and spray oils helps.

so,just go up and down in each bore a few times? I dont understand the need to do it.Does it not sort of create hatchmark scratches in the bores?

yes. You want to brake up any old wear lines so the new rings have a "new" surface to break into. I used to use a drill press and just work the handle up and down fast while my kid sprayed wd 40 on it.

thanks.that's what I needed to know.I just looked closer at my license plate.I thought it had sat since 2004.No, it had sat since 1984!!! If I were to just be replacing a head gasket on a less troublesome motor, using original rings, would honing be necessary or would that inhibit the sealing of the rings? And through z1 or partzilla or wherever are rings available?

oh, I am sure I will be honing and reringing.I have disconnected the front brake, the rear brake, taken the primary chain and sprocket loose, poured acetone and trans fluid down the sparkplug holes.Waiting.here is a pic of inside my chain cover.Lots of spiders eggs sacs in there.

I am thinking about switching to the 80 model.
1.It has functioning brakes.
2.I have the transferable title to it
3.The motor turns over easily, plus my other 80 motor does also

I dont have a headlight for the 80.The handlebar controls are missing.I could transfer the 79 ones to it.
The reg/rectifier are disconnected, plus the solenoid, main fuse are in a bucket, not sure where they mount

The dash panel has been gutted out.But the 79 one should transfer.
If I do the 80 I will go with mininal electronics. No signal lights.Unless the dash transfers and plugs in no neutral light, oil light, would want to disconnect them including clutch switch.I have no way to disconnect the tach, but looks like it just screws onto a mounting point on the motor. It does on the 79, and its intact.I have a manual. the placement of solenoid,r/r,main fuse are not shown in the manual, just described but not shown on the 80 model. All the rest of the 80 model wiring is intact.

perhaps the blinkers are plug and play and the headlight. If the dash is transferable, then all the lights would work.

I just read my manual closer. All the components should transfer. The solenoid and main fuse on the 79 are on the right, but the starter is on the left, so probably they have enough wire to reach to the other side.its only a few inches. The 79 headlight will also work. The R?R is the same also. Its from 81 up there are differences.I do not have sidecovers for the 80 but that is minor compared to the rest.

I know I can do this, because I will have them side by side making the transfers.I have built entire cars, and built houses.I know I can do this. But input and opinions on why I couldnt and shouldnt would be greatly appreciated.
