question for the experts.wil my 79 z airbox hook up to those carbs? If those are 750 carbs will any airbox hook up to them? If I have to find a 750 airbox will it fit in there? Does anyone here want to sell a 750 box if I need one?

I have had precious little time lately.About to get the engine out.It is locked up.I will try tearing it down, see if fixable.I have another motor if not.I tend to be impatient, wanted this to be a runner easily. But since it isn't I am going to give myself 6 months or more and do it piece by piece.Refurbish all I can, paint, redo, replace piece by piece learning as I go.I found one just like it in near perfect condition for $3200.This bike will be worth about that once it is in show quality condition. They are not worth a lot of money but they are very popular among a lot of guys. But I didnt buy it to resell.I bought it to try and restore.I have never done that,it is a learning experience, and I enjoy it so far.I have found the chain on the 79 is 2 links longer,I guess due to a longer swingarm.I have found chains from taiwan for $37, and exotic brands for $200.most good chains average $85.It is not an option to not replace it.After sitting 23 years.I was wondering about the other engine parts. It is likely this motor will be good for cases and covers only. The cam at a glance looks ok, as do the rocker arms and head cover.I am not going to waste time pulling the head while the motor is in the frame.I do not like the design of having the head bolts down in a cave hard to reach.

So, now the intense part starts.

got the engine out yesterday.First time for me.What a pain it is to get one of these engines out. This motor is locked up.I have another one.I am going to try disassembling the original, see if its salvageable, but i am not going to take much time messing with it.This is one of the dirtiest crudcovered bikes in regard to running gear, rusty chain, rusty nuts and bolts i have seen.it was a good feeling to finally have time to get the motor out.I have a replacement mastercylinder and caliper.I have a good seat and seat lock.I have acid treated the gas tank. But doing the motor and carbs are the priorities.

volker-Dang.My bike looks pristine compared to yours.By the time I get through I will have replaced tires, mastercylinder, seat, seat lock, front calipers, brake pads, probably rear shoes, clutch and throttle cables, handgrips, the entire motor, sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, possibly rotor and stator, solenoid, rectifier, sealed inners of gas tank, painted everything, get the seat recovered, and who knows what else.I could easily buy one in good shape for less than what I will have invested by the time I get done. But my plan was to learn these bikes, make a habit of restoring them or customizing them and then selling one for enough to break even.Kind of like therapy as you described it.

One bright side is when I took the left side exhausts off, the muffler and head pipes looked ok.On the right side the first 6 inches of the muffler where it welds to the head pipe was so rusted I used just my hand and twisted it off completely.I dont know how the right is destroyed and the left is not.At least that is one part I won't have to buy.knock on wood.

This was Folsomls bike, not mine.
In fact mine looked almost new when I got it (in 1992).
My intent was rather to keep a nice old bike for riding than doing a "restoration therapy" for the bike and myself.
I rather play around with other small stuff for that purpose.
But anyway I learnt much about the entrails of the CB650 during that time.
