1980 CB650 carbs - Connecting rod rubber pieces

Postby mlove01001101 » Tue Jul 19, 2016 11:06 am

Hi all.

I recently bought my first project bike, a 1980 CB650. The first step I took in the restoration was cleaning the carbs, but it seems I made a bit of a mistake. There seems to be some kind of rubber seal where the throttle shaft goes through to link the throttle valves, and i neglected that fact when I soaked the carb bodies in acetone for a few days. Those seals are all warped now (see attached photo), and I was wondering if anyone had a source on replacing them, or if they're even important enough to worry about (i.e. should I just remove them? They're obstructing the throttle shaft from going through).

Those o-rings not critical. They serve only as a dust seal for the rocker arm shaft.

To determine a correct replacement o-ring.
Measure the shaft outside diameter. This determines o-ring size
Measure the opening inside diameter.
Subtract shaft OD from opening ID. Then divide by 2. This give the o-ring thickness.

Example:
shaft OD: 10mm
opening ID: 14mm
opening ID - shaft OD: 4mm, Divided by 2: 2mm

This gives an o-ring of 10mm x 2mm for this example.
