Noob Carb Help...

Postby Kjkenney » Sat Aug 06, 2016 11:43 am

Cb650 noob here..went from old af05e scooter engines to the me5 on my 83 650...that being said I went from one carb to four and I cannot figure out how to "plumb" the tubes for the rack, to the petcock but the rack itself is complete. I bought the bike in pieces with the top end off and all the plastic T's and whatnot for the carbs were missing. I've searched high and low online for diagrams but come up empty every time. Apologies if this is easily findable but I cannot find it! Also is it easier to hook them up before putting the rack on? This has been quite the learning experience and I'm in love with this era of bike, so any help will be amazing thanks!!

You should only have to hook up the throttle cables and 1 fuel line to the petcock. The petcock has a vacuum line for the auto shut off. There will be a drain line to each bowl that just hangs down. And a vent tube to the airbox. I will look at my 83 here and see if anything else.

OK I might be overthinking it, which is nothing new. I have the metal t between 1+2,3+4, two total; does that then just T the tube into one line that connects to the petcock? And then the one vacuum line is on the boot for carb 2 yes? This seems far simpler than I was thinking hehe

No the two tee together to the airbox. should be pointing down. There is one mail fuel line in the front middle of 3 and 4 pointing up to the petcock. Try looking at the diagram at partsfish. I got the starter off for you. PM me your ADDY

A-ha! I was confused because of the evaporation hose manifold pictured in the diagrams, but the clymers manual says that was a CA only thing. That alone confused the hell out of me. So there's one big fuel line on the intake side and then two lines for the airbox that tee together closer to the engine side I see? I see the hose on the bottom of the airbox now as well. Last confusion...there's three spots for a hose on my petcock. One vacuum, one fuel, and one ???

one is just a vent to allow the diaphragm to move.

OK so now the exhaust... :D this came with a 4 to 1 manifold and I'm trying to put the split collars on. I've read up on people's woes with figuring these out and pretty sure I have the orientation right, skinny side in the head and the lip seats against the flange. But the header of the pipes seem like they have a collar already on them and I can't quite slide the flanges on to get the stud bolt caps on. Here's a pic.

That is part of the pipe. Am I missing something here? Is there different pieces I need for the aftermarket pipe?

I did notice that 2 out of the 8 I was given were a little shorter. Will post a pic of the differences in a minute here. When I compare the other 6 to oem ones online they definitely seem to match. My thought was that if they came off they should go back on but that might be too much faith in the po

Edit: sorry I meant 6 shorter and 2 longer. So the oem ones should work on this pipe yes? And the oem ones are shorter, on the left in pic?

use the 2 short ones and see if it works on a pipe. I dont know how a 4-1 hangs on that so support the bottom so your not putting pressure on just 2 studs

Well....thought I had it and snapped a stud! Cranked each cap a little back and forth and snap....so that's fun. There was almost no resistance turning them but now I see the error of my ways..The flange should fit over the collars yes? That extra lip near the pipe header makes it so the flange won't slide over. May have to come back to this later (obviously with the broken stud now), having fun wrestling the boots between carb and airbox on hehe

OK, so I think I may have been too into wanting the flange to meet flush with the head BUT this is the way I have it. The skinny sides of the collar push the lip and the flare on the collar seats against the flange. This works on all collars I have. It allows me to push the flange on to studs, and exposes about 3 threads, enough for me to get the caps on hand tight and progress with a socket, seeming to give me another 1/8 of an inch or so once the new gaskets crush in place. I provided a pic, does that seem right? Sorry for so many questions but the manual barely touches on this part and completely omits info on the collars. Ugh.

Ahh success, thank you! This was all a dry fit just to be sure, tied up the manifold to the bike and put a wood block under for support this time. Need to find a stud still :/
