I'm trying to put camshaft back on my 81 650 but forgot how I took it off. Doesn't it have to be put on the way it came off (oops) for the timing to be correct ?
I have it in place and the chain on but not sure the positioning. Any help.

Re: Camshaft
Do I have to hold the camshaft in place as I hold the chain sprocket to line up the holes for the bolts? Or is there a trick to this?
Re: Camshaft
The sprocket bolt holes won't get close or near the camshaft bolt holes to line up. What's the scoop there?
Re: Camshaft
Place and line up the camshaft while the sprocket and chain in the center are still free (held in your hand).
Then lift the chain over the sprocket until the sprocket bolt holes line up with the camshaft holes so you can insert a bolt.
Now push the sprocket on its mount and insert the first bolt. Turn the engine over one turn to get in the second bolt.
Then verify camshaft alignment again.
Good idea to press the tensioner back manually and fix it with the adjustment nut for that.
Then things are easy but consider that the chain will be under tension at the front for the correct timing position.
Be careful with torque. The camshaft thread may crack. I've seen welding points there.
