I have been looking for a project bike for a while now and finally found a cb650 that I liked. I got it from the guy for $100. He clames to have completely rebuilt the engine himself and all it needed was oil and a battery and put on the pipes it will start up, along with a few other small cosmetic parts that he still had off the like shock and light. He said he didn't have time for it anymore and needed to get rid of it. So my question is, should I put oil in it and see of she fires up? This is my first project bike so I'm new to all this and I don't feel like causing more problems for myself. I figured for $100 bucks it was worth a buy.
Also if I do descide to start it up, what are the steps to starting up an engine that has just been rebuilt? I was told to take out the spark plug and try to start it a couple of times to get things flowing.
Thank you all for your time

Welcome to the forum!
Did the PO paint that? That's quite a color selection.

Haha yeah my thought was he thought it was a Kawasaki when he got the bike and then realized it wasn't and went neon with the frame. Definitely am going to paint it

Wow! An art deco Honda. Kind of cool actually. I think I would do a valve check/adjustment, maybe a compression test, timing check, things like that before I tried to bring it to life. Be a shame if a small issue was overlooked and caused a big issue when you tried to start the bike.

I've heard a couple of other people like it too. I'm planning on blacking out everything, including powder coating the engine black and making the frame blue. I'll check all that out before I start it, but as for first time start what should I do?

Re: Finally got my hands on a cb650
Question for you: if you look at the side cover, at the "Custom" emblem, then go straight down. Is there a roller guide for the drive chain? My bike is missing little things all over, so hard to know what is stock and what isn't. For example, I realized when I got the bike home that there was no choke cable, but be damned if i could figure out where it goes. Google, ebay, parts diagrams, .... Finally put it all together, got a new cable, works like a charm, but getting there was uphill.
Also, unrelated, should the choke cable stay "on" when you pull it, and stay up until you press it down, or is it "hold it up to start the bike"? Mine won't stay in the up position; when i let go it goes back down.

PS - What's the budget to media blast and powder coat a frame? I'm considering it, but not right away. Still in the "get it road worthy" phase.

About the roller for the chain. If you are talking about the tab sticking up from the swingarm that is the mounting point for the chain guard. My choke doesn't stay on it's own, I have to hold it for a bit while the engine warms. That can take a few minutes on my 81, a real cold natured beast it is.
