High idle without choke!
Hello, I just did a valve adjustment, cleaned/rebuilt my carbs, static timing check.. and now my bike is idling at 4K rpm without the choke. Any ideas why this is? I adjusted the pilot screws by 1/2 turns, in/out but the idle did not change, currently the mixtures screws are back to 2 1/4 turns out. I've got new gas in the tank, I checked the spark plug gaps which are set to the manual specs, timing is set correctly, carbs have been synchronized.. I dont know what could be causing this.. could this be an issue with the valves? I only had to adjust the #3 exhaust clearance when doing the valves. also checked the throttle which is set with 1/4 turn of free play as recommended in the manual. Need help with this one, I must have overlooked something!
Any advice it very appreciated!

Did you try adjusting the idle screw. My 81 has a screw with a large knob on it sticking out at the bottom between the second and third carbs, this is the idle adjustment.

I feel dumb. The knob was way off. I got it adjusted and idling at 1.5k rpm. My brain is fried, been working on this bike all day, I always miss the simple things. Thank you sir

+1 on the fact we have all been there, just glad it was that simple and I could be of some help.
Re: High idle without choke!
1500 rpm is a bit high though, between 1100 to 1400 rpm is what the manual says.
My cb 650 will rev about 1100 rpm when it's warm enough to go on idle without choke and around 1400 rpm when it have reached optimal temp.

Yea, it's a bit high but 1.5k after fully warm is okay for now. I still have a lot of fine tuning to do . Thanks for all the feedback guys!
Re: High idle without choke!
I keep mine at about 14 to 15 k just to help the charging
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
Re: High idle without choke!
1100 to 1400 is the right RPM at idle and the generator dont start to charge until you hit 3000 RPM.

Well what i have noticed on mine CB650 is that the headlight only get full effect at 3000 rpm and up in dark enough surroundings. Have'nt checked with any electrical tool though.

Re: High idle without choke!
maybe yours need to be cleaned up and checked out. I been cleaning all the contacts on mine. I have never had a charging problem one any of mine but with all the reports I been doing preventive maintenance.

Re: High idle without choke!
New rotor, regulator and have changed the electrical harness due to lack of charging.
So i think it's no problem there. What i have notice is that the headlight reaches full effect when RPM reaches 3000 so it may start to charge at lower RPM, have'nt checked yet, so far it just works ok.
