Carb removal difficulty

Postby michael_650 » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:52 am

I have now taken the carbs off the bike a total of, oh, maybe 10 times. EVERY time is a pain in the a$$, both getting them off and getting them back on. Is there a secret trick, maneuver, technique, spell to getting them off more easily?

I just wiggle up and down. as long as the clamps are loose they seem to pop off. To get them back on; grease the boots, then ratchet strap around the engine and carbs. Make sure you don't snap off your choke linkage or any small delicate parts.

I don't have any problem getting them out of the boots, and the strap technique to get them back in works just fine. It's trying to slide them sideways in/out from between the motor and air box. It seems like the throttle and choke connectors want to work against me and act as stops. I have decided taking them out of the left side of the bike is better for connecting/disconnecting cables and gas lines. But it's still a huge PITA.

use a ratchet strap to hold the airbox back. Dont get crazy with it though.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

Take a thin piece of sheet metal and slide it in between the carbs and the insulators for the airbox. Use this to slide the airbox back as far as you can, then slide the carbs out (while the sheet metal is still in place). This will keep the carbs from catching on everything as you slide them out.
