Distorted Carb Inlet and Metal Choke Replacement

Postby GeorgeSweety » Sun Dec 17, 2017 12:36 pm

Carb No.3 inlet has been flattened on the bottom, is this going to cause problems? Can it be straightened or would it just crack if I tried? I bought these as a replacement set for my 650 Custom as they haven't got the dreaded air cut off valves, they were off a CB650Z (UK Model). I knew beforehand that the plastic choke pulley was broken so I managed to find a metal replacement from a CB750 K7, either 1977 or 78, I can't recall.
I separated the rack and tried the metal part but my camera batteries dieded, it slots straight on but I think I will need to file the flange on the new pulley by about 0.5-1.0 mm so that the spring clip and washer will fit.

As it's on the airbox side it wont cause any great problem i can tell. The only thing is you could get some unfiltered air through there but i think it's of no importance and on the other hand it may not leak in any air at all.

Thanks MEHall, if it isn't that important I was figuring to fill the dented section with epoxy putty and file it to shape for the airbox rubber to seal to.

Have you already measured/tested to make sure the PB carbs will fit your bike?

BTW: It's easy enough to bypass the air cutoffs.

Hi Folsoml, yes I have checked the carbs for size, they are identical apart from the air cut offs. I've read about blanking the little buggers off but seeing as I picked this rack up for peanuts I'm going to refurb them and see if there is any difference to the running. It's more sort of an experiment than anything else as it's so cold and miserable here at the moment I'm not doing any riding

It was about 78 degrees F here today--not to rub it in. 8)

You poor buggers, how do you cope? Maybe the U.N. will parachute in some relief supplies of extra cold beer and ice cream
