Pipes and exhaust
Pipes and exhaust
Looking to make my exhaust look awesome. I was thinking a wrap and paint job, but would love any ideas.
Had thought of taking the paint off and rechroming, but I think that’s way to expensive

Re: Pipes and exhaust
Hi matt and welcome. Well what can I say.....you've got a SOHC 650 Nighthawk The factory standard exhaust system is one of the most awesome features on these bikes so if you can find one then that is what I would do. Where are you? I've been trying to find a replacement exhaust for my Nighthawk but it is just about impossible in the UK, I do see a fair few for sale on ebay in the US in various condition and price but the shipping costs to the UK are astronomical

Hi, I’m in Northern Ontario Canada. I thought buying a complete replacement would be expensive as well, but I do agree that the original system looks great. I’ll try to see what I can find today. Do I have to find the 1982 one (the year of my bike) or will an exhaust system from another year fit?

Re: Pipes and exhaust
Hi matt, you would be looking for a secondhand original exhaust system as you won't find a new one As for it being specifically for an 82 then I would say that any SOHC 650 exhaust "should" fit. The thing is, the early bikes from 79/80 usually had the PD slide carbs where the later 81/82 bikes had the CV carbs, so the carb inlets are spaced differently between the two types but I have no idea if the exhaust ports have the same spacing or if they are different as well I actually have a spare 4 into 2 system from an 80 CB650 Custom that I intend to use on my Nighthawk if I cannot repair the Nighthawks original 4 into 4.
On the early 4 into 2 system, the two inner header pipes are clamped in place and the two outer are fixed (welded as one piece) so there should be room for adjustment to make them fit the ports. The later Nighthawk pipes are welded together for 1+2 and 3+4 cylinders so there isn't any room for adjustment. So in a nutshell I would say that an earlier pre 82 exhaust probably would fit if you couldn't get an original one for an 82, but after 82 the engines were DOHC and I'm pretty sure that they will not fit the SOHC engine.

Re: Pipes and exhaust
any 4-4 sohc 650 will fit. 80 and 81 customs had them to.
I have 2 extra sets in but yes shipping would be a lot.

My 80 650 Custom has 4 into 2 as standard but it also had spoked wheels so I think it was one of the first 650 Customs.

Re: Pipes and exhaust
I would think the chances of finding New Old Stock to be very slim indeed.

so it is probably not a custom. or someone swapped them out. In 80 that all that made the custom mostly.
I'm in colorado.
NOS new old stock. will be hard to find
