why would pipes #1 & 3 be cool?

If it's broken or just needs tweaked

Do you have the Haynes Workshop manual?

got the Clymer. Getting to it. Still tho, how would the components work for 2&4 but not when plugged into 1&3?

There are no components that work on 2 and 4 or 1 and 3. Those cylinders do not operate with each other. It should be 1 and 4 or 2 and 3. BUT if you had a component that worked on 1 and 4 but not on 2 and 3, it would suggest that there is something wrong with the wiring going to 2 and 3. Have you checked continuity on your wires? Have you cleaned all the electrical contacts (everywhere on the bike--not just your trouble areas.

jj, this is the point that I was trying to make, "if" I had checked the wiring first I wouldn't have spent so much time messing about with swapping parts. My irrational fear of all things electrical made me convinced that it was some component that wasn't working rather than the wiring that connects it all together. If I get my hands on a new bike that won't start, I check the wiring first and clean "ALL" electrical connectors, an afternoons work can eliminate a lot of potential problems.

wait, what does it mean? that they'd really be 120 like 2&4 but because something is slightly off with valves 1&3 right? What else could affect compression?

I don't understand your question, but those compression numbers are fine. That is not the reason those cylinders aren't working.

well first of all clymer manual says 170 +/- 30, so just they is off by almost 20, but what I first noticed was the first other symptom special to 1&3 other than the header temps, the compression on both is a little higher than 2&4... but who ever hadna problem with too much compression? so idk. do you?

the working ones, 2&4 have lower compression, so I went with the idea then that 1&3, nom firing ones, might have too high of compression for whatever reason, tho I've never heard of too high of compression, but idk

book says if after adding oil and compression "returns to normal, the valves are good but the piston rings are defective". For sure? Wouldn't any pair of piston and rings produce more compression after a dose of dealing sealing oil?

Check this out: if 1&3 are wet and cold and producing BETTER compression than 2&3 my inner sherlock says it might be the exhaust valves not staying open long enough causing tighter compression and interfering with combustion no?

well that's where I was going anyway....

riddle me this batman, is it possible both coils are 1/2 failing? Are the two circuits of a coil separated by any parts or is it like a single two prong fork under the case? Do they fail altogether or is it usually in one cylinder per failing coil?

great news, my timing is OFF! that could mean an easy fix, *fingers crossed*

but what special tool do I need or special trick is there to get those Philips head screws off the timing plate? And how do you even get sideways leverage on it? I wish there were a wall next to this side of the bike. I tried wd40 and hit the heads of them with a hammer behind a small punch. There's gotta be an easier way. I think these screws are the last straw for me tonight. You beat me bike. but I'll see your ass in the morning!
