Especially since so many people pull them off and try to use pods.

Ok that answers my question pretty well. Copy the original in worst case but as there is no shortage of airboxes, as you say, get a replacement.
(Now i can rest easy. )

Which bike and carbs? I've got the cb650sc with CV carbs and really contemplating getting pods.

My air box is out and I dread the idea of putting it back in and all this extra space looks sweet. Would make a good storage area for tools and snacks.

That wasn't you that I recently read in these forums that had a lot of luck with pod filters on several bikes? I think it was two Hondas, one with 1ltr engine, your 650 and maybe another make? The 81 has the same engine and carbs as mine. You wouldn't advise? I'm at sea level in SWFL if it makes a difference

Yes i have ran 2 81 650/s with pods. One one the road over many miles over 10 years with no problems untill the oil pump died.
The other at the drag strip for 12 years and it was still good when I stopped racing. No i didnt just show up i placed in points 2 years and had to file taxes one time so makes me a pro LOL .
Both bikes would run the same numbers when set up was switched over.
Elevation does matter. I am at 6k so despite all the " expert" advise to go bigger jets smaller was faster. Did run 4-1 headers on both.
I do run a 360 twin with pods to. Also cv carbs. Runs good. Does have some hi rpm isues but I dont care as only run it to 7k anyway. might even be the points. Rode the shit out of it for 5 years. Still runs just cant find the fn keys after moving.
I have some pics posted here in the old posts and some on SOHC4 gallery.
Now I will wait for the online EXPERTS to tell me how wrong i am LOL
BTY My dad bought the bike i raced new in 82. I have owned many, But I dont know what im doing.

Did you do anything to support the carbs? They used to use the air box to keep them from hanging down stressing the boots to the engine.

no other support. Always thought about it but never got around to it.
FYI the 82 nitehawk box is a little diff than the others. I think it was just cosmetic though.
