Starting issues an air box

Postby cam2869 » Thu Jul 26, 2018 11:53 pm

I have a 82 nighthawk 650 and I cleaned the carbs and reinstalled them and the bike will not start it has compression in 3 cyclinders and spark in all. My next question is there a easier way to take the air box out instead of having to take it out of the wheel well
It has new oil, tank was sealed, petcock cleaned ish, new air box boots and new filter, and new battery please help it has 15000 miles

The one cylinder has 70/100 on a leak down test. It was leaking from rings and exhaust

Welcome here! :D

It should start and run somehow on 3, even on 2 cylinders.
Plug cables from left coil go to 1+4 from right coil to 2+3.
Do you have fuel in your floater bowls? You may check by opening the release screws.
If your carbs have the vacuum shutoff (a part with several hoses sitting on the rear between carbs 3+4) bypass it for now.

Sorry, no idea about the airbox removal.

Good luck!

Yes they did have gas in the bowls but it turned out to be old. I tested the vacuum shut off and it works I am doing a thorough cleaning of all the jets and carbs and I split them but now having trouble to get the choke spring to work

What is it doing? Did you see the carb cleaning manual in the General Discussion forum? It has step by step instructions on how to reassemble your bank so the chokes open and close smoothly.
