Congratulations!
For the mixture screws:
My book says 1 5/8 turns out for the PD50A carbs and 2 1/2 turns out for the PD50B carbs and 1 1/2 turns out for the PD51A carbs. Especially the last value is not considered to be accurate. If you had improvement with choke, it was definitively too lean before. So I would say no need to worry about emmissions.
You may get the engine really warm and turn in 1/4 turn for the emmission test in case you still have concerns. But as Ibsen wrote, only a measurement can show where you really are.
Ignition setup
Morning Volker_p...its the PD51A carbs. Would love to have it set up properly on a dyno. I'll get it through the MOT and depending upon driveability, might consider it. Used to work on Minis in my youth and always found money spent on dyno well spent even on low value cars. anyone had experience of having these bikes set up on a dyno?
dont put a blanket over me...I was only blinking!!
All ready for MOT on the 150307. Bled the front brakes today as they were spongy...fluid like milk. Much better now. Might try and post a video clip of it running. My local bike store seems to be able to get genuine parts for it with ease and not expensive. Was going to by a generic pair of grips at a cost of £15-£20, genuine honda pair £12, will be here tomorrow. Genuine gear selector rubber £1.80, and in stock:D

I agree about the Dyno test if you have the chance to take one. And I belive the 1 1/2 turn out is more like a good starting point after a carb rebuild or clean up. In the workshop manual the correct procedure for fine tuning the pilot screws after they are back on the bike are described, and it is a pretty long one too.
yeah...just checked haynes. After describing the fine tuning procedure it says, "The above sequence is not described by the manufacturers for the PD51A carburretors as fitted to the UK market cb650 models". Would love to spend the day with a fuelling/carb expert

This is how it is described in the Clymer manual:
