If it's broken or just needs tweaked

Interesting measure.
I may try out that side-gapping for a possible improvement besides the psychological factor.
My usual fuel consumption is about 60mpg at 55mph cruising.
But I guess it should be more effective to try it at my dirtbike first (650 single, only one plug).

So do you plan on replacing the innards of the exhaust with something more free flowing?
Or keep it gutted?

And nice link on side gapping, it describes the process to do it very well, thnx!

I'm working on some easily removable baffles so I can quickly go from quiet to loud in a minute or so. They will be much more free flowing than stock, though. I'll probably make a few different ones for different sound levels. They're fairly simple and should look pretty inconspicuous.

Was there anything in the mufflers that resembled a catalytic converter of any type? I know they were required on cars in the US as of 1972, but not sure about cycles. The smell from my exhaust compared to my newer bike makes me wonder if the exhaust is being treated at all.

I don't think bikes were required to have cat's until much later ('90s?). I don't know what's in the front of the muffler, however, as I can only see about 4 inches into the tail end of the pipe. If I decide to cut them off and replace them with a Cherry Bomb (painted, of course 8)) I'll take the whole thing apart and we'll see what the innards look like.

I have my mufflers off today and they look pretty rotten inside. It does look as though there could've been a little something down toward the inlet of the muffler at one time. There are the remains of what could've been three little tabs in there. I'll try to take some pictures to share here. You'll get a kick out of how incredibly rotten they are.

Ok, here are some pictures. These mufflers are Sankei model 2061. I was able to remove the mufflers because they were cobbled like so:

Yep, somebody just shoved them in there and the only thing holding them in place is the bracket at the passenger footpeg!
Here's some of the stuff I found rattling around inside the header pipes:

And here are photos of each muffler from the inlet end:

I'm sorry that they weren't a little bit more intact for ya'll, but it's the best I could do. Maybe it's time for me to replace my exhaust? I'm trying to find a set of 4-into-2 with turnouts.

Here are a couple of links to some really bad recordings I did inside the garage. The first one is without the mufflers and the second is with them back on. They are WAV files and the only player on this box that will play them is Windows Media Player. If you don't have that, I don't know what will play them.

Just click on the link and scroll down the page to where it says 'Click here To Download!' Click on that and save the file someplace, then open the file with the media player.

Replace them with a cherry bomb glasspack.

I've already ordered an exhaust. You've got a thing for glasspacks, don't you, Pinhead? Actually, if the rest of the exhaust wasn't so butchered, it might not have been a bad idea to hide glasspacks inside the existing mufflers. Hmm... nice chrome megaphones on the outside, cherrybombs on the inside. Maybe you should try it. You could even cap 'em off with stock looking endcaps.

Lol I just like the idea of straight-through mufflers with no restriction. Sure you'd have to re-jet to make it work, but anything to reduce pointless pumping losses that reduce efficiency.

I just like cherrybombs after we put true dual-exhaust's on a 305 SBC in a '59 Chevy Viking. Sounded really good, flowed very well (really woke up the motor) and were nice and cheap.

Yeah, they sound really good downstream of a catalytic converter too. I use them on my truck because they last longer than mufflers for me. Most muffllers I've used fall apart inside and make that damn rattling noise after a couple of years.

Welcome here! :D

This means a bolt for the header mounts at the head cracked or the bolt of a clamp for the mufflers?
