Hi all, good progress on re-assembly today (will update thread later with pics) but at the moment I could do with a picture that shows how the starter relay mounts. As you can see in my picture from dis-assembly it was just hanging in space. It has a rubber mount on the base with 2 slots in, which I guess slde onto a metal tab somewhere, but I don't seem to have anything with a suitable width tab to engage with. Any pics showing your relay woulds be appreciated.
Sorry, this link doesn't upload so you'll have to click on each to see the pics.
Regards, Phil

starter relay mounting
hmmm. thanks Ibsen. I don't have the ears on my battery box, but do have the 2 slots in the rubber mounting.
What I do have on the box are a pair of tabs that look like I can clip a rubber band around the relay - in fact amongst the debris of the strip down is a rotten piece of elastic with a very rusty metal loop which did appear to hook over the front tab. Now I think I know what it was holding. You can see the remains of the 'strap' attached to the rear tab in this picture http://uk.geocities.com/cb650@btinternet.com/pic091
Have a look again at this pic http://uk.geocities.com/cb650@btinternet.com/pic019 and you'll see what I mean.
Both ends of the bracket are formed like this. In the short term I can hook a sturdy rubber band around these to hold the relay in place. The rubber mount will still rest on the 'foot' of the bracket as that is there.

I had a look at a couple of pics in the Haynes manual and on those pics it looks like the relay is strapped to the battery box with a rubber band.
Edit
I found it in the parts list for the European 650Z.
It is a rubber band, and it is Honda parts number 35858-426-000
It is part number 16 on the diagram.
The parts list:

And here are the rest of the parts lists for the Euro 650Z:

So on my bike a PO must have made some modifications. He also replaced the stock screw on main fuse with a blade fuse in a fuse holder, which is a better solution.

Wow, thanks Ibsen, that parts manual is an excellent resource. I have a rubber mounting block with slots for the two tabs similar to yours - the rubber piece in the diagram does not look to have those slots either side - so I have a mixture of parts.
Oh, and I have a piece of fuse wire fitted (badly) to mine, but at least it is fuse wire and not a paperclip! See here...
many thanks, Phil
