Tire specs

Postby salzig hund » Tue Jun 18, 2013 3:42 pm

Does anyone know the widest rear tire size I can fit on my 82 650? With stock 40 spoke?

Typically you can go up one size from stock without problems. It will change the height and handling characteristics though. It can be difficult to find a tire like that as there are many out there to choose from.

In the automotive industry it is called a +1. They usually lower the aspect ratio though to compensate.

According to www.bikez.com your bike came with a 3.75-18 which is the old style of markings.

Here is the chart to compare: http://www.maxxis.com/MotorcycleATV/Mot ... ion_charts

So a modern (3.75-18) 110/90/18 might be possible to turn into a 120/90/18, but your height goes up, and it may not fit, rubs on the fender, so you may have to search for a 120/80/18, which will definitely lower the bike and in the end still may be too fat and rub on the forks or get rash from the chain, as you can see from the chart it is another half inch thick. It all depends on your fork clearances, measured in millimeters at where the thickest portion of the tire will be traveling.

Good luck.

Im new to the bike world, and I know this may sound silly to you, but just looking at the bike sitting w/ stock tire.. it looks as if I could fit an inch in on both sides... I'll just save this for last and take it to a tire shop so I can test fit something. I'll note your input, thanks!

A 82 with spoke wheels should be a 130/90 17.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
