Shifter Peg Oil Seal

Postby flamdchicken » Sun May 11, 2014 8:29 pm

I have a 1980 CB650C that has a leak that appears to be coming from the shifter peg oil seal and following down the peg and dripping onto the exhaust. When it sits over night I seem to have about a half dollar size soil spot, if not larger. I am wondering if I have found the correct seal (#24 on this fiche I believe). I am also wondering how to do this change. Can I get a hook and pull out the hold seal and simply press in the new one or must I take some pieces off? How much oil is behind this seal? Can I pull out the old one without worrying too much about a fountain of oil pouring out, or can I place a bowl underneath and have a small steady drip while I change the seal?

Thanks for the help.

#24 is what you need. Here is a video I made on this exact procedure:

awesome, thanks for the link, thats exactly what I wanted. It looked like you drained your oil before hand, is that right? Do you have any idea of how much oil is behind there? working in the parking lot of my apartment it is a bit of a pain to do an oil change and I have done 2 already in the past month and do not wish to make that a third, so if it can be done without draining the oil I would prefer that. I am hoping that I can get it out and get the new one on while having something to catch a small stream of oil pouring out and then just top off the oil after the new seal is in place.

I did not drain the oil. If I recall, I leaned the bike over to the right, but that's it.

Put the bike up on the center stand, and there should be no need to drain the oil.

its very simply change, the seal sits higher than the oil level so check and make sure you dont have to much oil in the engine. that will cause the leak as well. its a simple friction fit and nothing holds it in place. a quarter size over night sounds to me like you have to much oil or not the right seal.

I just changed mine. Nice to not see that little spot of oil under the bike this morning! Nice write-up and video Folsomi!

Just did mine yesterday. Took me a bit to get the old seal out but it popped out eventually! Lubed up the new seal and in it went!

Thanks for the information. I was able to change the seal out at a very leisurely pace in about an hour.
