Leaky head
Leaky head
Hey guys, I think I might've posted this before but not sure. I have a leaky head on my 81 cb650... This is my first bike and I don't know too much so any help would be sweet. With this fix, I will have up and running. Thanks -Hawk
Re: Leaky head
It may have a crack in it. Would some sealant work? Would have to be heat resistant. Or some type of weld? I know nada about it so.

Re: Leaky head
start by finding out which joint, seal etc. is leaking - a good clean is in order first (jet wash and degrease) you can then pin point where the leak is starting from
take a photo of the starting point of the leak and post again for help
cheers

Re: Leaky head
Look familiar? This was my oil leak when I rebuilt my CB650. The problem comes from the six rubber coins that cover the access holes to the cylinder bolts. Unfortunately, it involves removing the cylinder head to get to them.

Thanks for the replies guys! As I've mentioned I don't know too much about this stuff. Still learning. Folsomi, im hoping that's the case. What to do after taking that off?
Re: Leaky head
Good news! I was wrong in that you DON"T have to remove the cylinder head to get to them, just the cylinder head cover. Check out number (lucky) 13 in this link. You will need 6 of them. You will also need number 6 from this link (same company). Unfortunately, the valve cover gaskets are obsolete, but you can probably get away with reusing the ones you have.
Here is a link to a shop manual. Make sure that when you are putting the cylinder head cover back on that you follow the step-wise pattern for reinstalling the bolts. Also, when you take them off, keep them in order so you know which one goes where.

Re: Leaky head
As the oil is showing at the top of the head. I would sooner suspect the cylinder head cover, or rocker arm cover gaskets to be the problem. But no harm in replacing those round sealing rubbers while you are in there.
Go ahead and pick up a complete gasket set to save yourself some money. You will use most of it eventually.

Re: Leaky head
there are 6 of these coin gaskets.. a large majority of the time they are the cause for the leaky oil on these motors.. unfortunately the rocket cover gasket and the inspection cover gaskets are probably dry and need to be replaced also... ordering an entire engine gasket kit is usually the cheapest way to get the coin gaskets and the other gaskets...
Re: Leaky head
Engine gasket kit eh?! How much they run for lads?!!
Re: Leaky head
Yea the rubber caps are fine. I'm thinking more inside. The cylinder head somewhere.
