WTB 1982 CB650SC Tank

Postby biker28169 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 9:17 am

I've got a fairly decent 1982 CB650SC that I picked up for free. It would crank over, but not run because the tank had "just been coated" and was empty. Long story short, the tank was a total waste. So now I've got a bike that should be running, but can't. Finding a decent tank has proven very hard since I didn't realize this was a "one year" bike. Once I get it running I also need to rebuild the front brake calipers and do some other work, but the first hurdle seems to be getting it running. If I can't find a tank I'll probably have to end up parting it out instead which would be a shame.

Good luck and expect to pay. I have 3 bad tanks. Last one I seen on ebay was 250 or so. I'm just going to use one of my other tanks on it. Have to cut the front mounts down a little but thems the breaks

Yeah, I've been seeing lots of crap out there, but nothing any better than what my bike came with. I guess I could always go to my local do-it-yourself store and buy some steel and make one. After all, they make it look so easy on the TV...

Have you considered cleaning the one you have? It isn't that big a deal. If it doesn't leak it can be made useable. The hardest part is getting the old sealer out, but that just takes a little time, is a bit messy, but not hard. My advice would be if it doesn't leak don't put sealer back in it. Coat it with 2 cycle oil until you are ready to use it. Drain the oil when you are ready use the tank, do not rinse it. You will get a little smoke but no flash rusting.

I no longer have the tank. It was severely rusted and it turns out the previous owner covered it up with body filler. The tank was just too far gone. If I'd realized just how hard it was to find one and harder yet to find one with a cap I'd have held onto it and tried replacing the rusty parts. Live and learn I guess.

Mine probably is reparable it was ok when i got the bike. Jerry put 3000 miles on it right away. I went to clean it and it turned into a sprinkler.
Would have left it alone but it was nasty on the inside.
