I would not like to have anything like that in an engine with the main bearings being slide bearings.

will the little o rings come with the gasket kit, no easy fix with these things so i reckon im going to have to strip it down. do you think i should change the pistons and rings while im down there, bike has done 71k but you would swear it was half that

Changing pistons or not at 71tkm depends on your acceptance of oil consumption. Mine went well over 100tkm, runs great but consumes much oil at high rpm.
Urgently use a small enough torque wrench in the stepwise pattern for the cylinder head cover to avoid thread stripping. Head bolts also have similarly susceptible threads. Clean out the head bolt area between the cylinders before you open anything! Usually there is much sand and small stones collected.
Everything from the top down to piston swap can be done with the engine in the frame.

cheers, not sure that i will change the pistons, it does blow black smoke when high reving (showing off) while idling, but not while driving. maybge just clean up the pistons tops while im down there. two other faults the bike has is the trip does not work and its a bit of a fiddle with the choke to get her started and until she warms up does not idle brilliantly.

looks like a lot of work but i reckon its no where near as bad as it looks, looking forward to doing it, i will post pics if i can figure out how to

If the leak isnt bad I little stop leak is ok. Not a full can of it. STP works best but havent been able to find it lately. Dont put much faith in it stoping a leak though. Ive used it with no ill efectes but not much in results. I used it a bunch in my 360 when I first got it running. I had it sitting for 8 years before I put it on the road. I used stp and changed the oil often and it leaks less than the 650 with new gaskets. But that could be the mech on the 650  .
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
