Hail completely wiped us out.

Postby Pinhead » Sun Aug 14, 2011 8:48 pm

Last Tuesday a strong thunderstorm went through central KS. Coming from the northwest, it left a swath of absolute devistation more than 20 miles long, and destruction even further than that.

For us, more than 300 acres were completely wiped out. The grass looks like a mowed yard in December (without the snow) and 180 acres of feed that was better than five feet tall on Monday was reduced to a tilled field on Tuesday. You can't even see the stalks sticking out of the ground. Trees were stripped of their bark. Power lines went down.

While rounding up the bruised and bleeding cattle we noticed dozens of dead rabbits and didn't see a bird in the sky.

Once the windows broke out of the norh side of our neighbor's house, the wind was blowing so hard that the hail was breaking through the bedroom's south wall!! He said the grapefruit-sized hail sounded like someone was beating on the roof with a sledge hammer.

I'll post pics when I get home... It's like nothing we've ever seen. The old timers don't remember seeing anything like it.

Pasture looking south. Notice the barren trees. Only cedar trees haven't been stripped.

Here's the storm! Sorry they're kind of blurry; it was taken on a phone cam and they were in a hurry to get the hell out of the way!

Wow! I live in Lawrence, we got all of the terrifying looking clouds, but thankfully only the rain portion, no hail.

Thanks for sharing the pics, glad you're safe! What town are you near?

I don't think you got this particular storm; it went SE from west of Natoma to east of Dubuque KS. Our farm is south of Dorrance, KS. HERE is where the feed patch was.

Sorry to hear that. Hope nobody got injured. We had something similar some years ago that ruined the harvest, roof windows and many cars. But it was only a small stripe, just a few miles away nothing serious happened any more.

Ah, my apologies, you're further west than I first thought.

You central plains guys get ALL the major storms.

Glad everybody's safe and sound.
