My 79 does all right in that department as long as I ride around at over 3500 for a while before turning it off. Lot's of slow city driving and short distances will drain it though.

I work at a shop, and my charging system is throwing me for a loop. the stator checks out, rectifier is good. i have 12v or 11v at 1500 rpm out of rectifier going to bat. 12.5v at 4k rpm. will this be enough voltage to keep bat. charged?

For 4krpm, 12.5V seems too low. Should be around 14-15V or so. If your battery is allright, you've got a weak charging system or maybe the relevant contacts for reference of regulation are poor. My book says that with headlight on, discharge of the battery should stop above 1650rpm with an intact charge system.

Charging issues

I guess I've been lucky so far. Bought the bike nearly 2 months ago and have ridden it 5,000km. Mileage on the bike is unknown (clocks changed by PO) but it hasn't let me down yet; the battery reads a healthy 14 volts-ish when the motor is revved.
