Hi guys,
I just joined your forum. I have a couple of 650's , love them, but they are like the black sheep of the Honda SOHC4 family, hard to get accurate information on, unless you know others that eat this stuff regularly . I could use some learnin on these fine machines and I'm hoping that I can get a little direction ,should I get in a jam, and that's why I'm here....and to get ideas about upgrades....and maybe at some time ,I might have enough 650 experience to guide others new guys after a while.
Been around 500-4 and 550-4's for a few years, I kinda collect them I guess. Rebuilt all the ones I have from ground up. My little collection got wiped out in Irene, so while I was rebuilding and expanding the 550 collection, I needed a ride and a 81 650c came up, reluctantly I snagged it.and Holy cow , I love that machine, It's my first choice to ride every time I get in garage to choose the ride of the day.
I liked the upgrades that followed the end of the 550's so much that I picked up no papers complete 650c and transferred the entire machine to a 500 frame with 550 tank....I like the "classic" look.
A few weeks ago, I was again fortunate enough to purchase an 81 650, it's a little different than the custom but I really like it. It has some electrical issues that I'm trying to work out next, but the rest of it is reasonably respectable now. This one was only on the road for one season before it had some trouble and was cast aside...only 1700 miles on it. Hoping to have it to original glory this summer.
The 650 c has 44k + on it now, runs great , I think it needs a visual freshen up that I hope to start this winter.
Well that's me. So hello .

Welcome here! It looks like you are certainly qualified to work on the Cb650. If you look in my signature, you will find a link to many of the most common issues that might arise with this bike.

Good luck, and we love pictures--even of non-CB650's!

Welcome over to the 650 side of the SOHC4 world.

Nice collection of rides you have there. Your experience with the 500/550's will generally carry over to the 650. Just think of the 650 as the high performance version of the 550. As far as part interchange info. You will find that the 650 is a blend of SOHC, and DOHC parts

Electrical issues usually center around the charging system with the rotor, and harness connector being the normal causes of problems. These usually lead to burnt out voltage regualtor, and CDI ignition units. Other electrical problems that I have dealt with include ignition switch bottom cover (No power when switch turned on), and bad solenoid to starter cable (Hot start problems).

MiGhost,
The newest 81 650 that I have seems to have all those issues. CDI's both fried, Reg/Rec looks like it might have seen some heat too ,I expected the problem's source to be the rotor ,I opened it up for a visual , found nothing unusual , didn't smell burned.
Folsoml,
Thanks I'm going to have to find a thread on the charging system and a multimeter so I can replace parts at the source of the trouble so I don't fry the new parts that are coming. I did a fly by on this site a day or two ago and found it or similar, hoping to find it during holiday time off .
Have 82 wiring harness coming in soon , a place to start, I don't trust the original harness, it's had hot spots and is a little crunchier that I'd like.
I was going with Ricks for the replacement electric parts, is that the way to go?

Some helpful advice from Volker_P:

CB 1100 F (SC11) Super Bol d'Or.

CB 750 KZ (RC01); CB 750 F (RC04); CB 750 C (RC06)
CB 900 F (SC01+SC09) Bol d'Or
according to http://www.my-bikeshop.de/product_info. ... ATOR.html/

Rotor resistance should be 4-10 Ohms between sliprings, no contact to ground/rotor chassis.
Stator resistance should be 0.4-0.5 Ohms, symmetrical between each pair of yellow wires, no contact to ground/stator mounts.

CB 650, Yes , I've been on SOHC4 since April 2011. Excellent people, endless knowledge, especially on 550 and 750.
The 650 owners are also excellent about their own machines There are many there from down under who have a little different machines than we do here in the states, I'm sure most of the info applies, but some doesn't and like I said the 650 really is the blacksheep in the SOHC4 family. So not as much ready information on these fine gems there, I need to be where the main focus is about the machines that I like and am currently working on. I can already see that there is a world of knowledge here concentrated on the very thing I'd like to focus on, and just by running through the threads, that this group is friendly, willing to share info, and are proud to be owners of this not so well known machines.
Oh I've found ( second handedly) that a G/F's bitching about bikes is nothing like the thunderstorms that a wife can deliver regularly. Mine was only a little spippy about the first 5, rolled her eyes after 10, and has excepted it for " what it is " after that. Whatever it is. I'm happy about that so far, but I have heard the "Aren't you going to sell one?" a couple times.
I do have 2 last pictures this time they are 650's
Image
This is my regular ride,as you can tell by the fact that it could use a visual freshening up
Image
This is my most recent purchase with electric issues, I gave it a general get the rust off clean up, it has a wopping 1700 miles on the clock and I'm still waiting for an outastate title to show up.
Thanks for the electric threads Volker-P, Mi Ghost and Folsoml, I got some reading to do this week.
