I'm a member, having done a few 'qualifier' rides over the years. I cannot relate to the folks who do the mega-rides, like the Iron Butt Rally (11,000 miles/11 days), but find the more accessible rides an interesting challenge. For me the challenge is to maintain timely forward motion without riding recklessly and above my limits, as well as allowing time to get off the bike and rest.
My first 'qualifier' was on a Kawasaki KLR650 (yes, a dual purpose bike) on which I did the Alberta 2000 Rally. 2100kms in 25 hours.
I did a couple more rides on my VFR800, with no problems, and have recently done a 1000km ride on my '79 650. I'm working on a 1000mile/1 day ride on it, just to show that older classic bikes can still do what the newer bikes can do.
Yes, the seat is not as comfortable as some, but I get off the bike often enough that it is not too much of a problem.

Windshields
I'm not a fan of windshields, so I do not use one. Since I do not ride at warp speeds it doesn't seem to be an issue for me.
