Welcome here! :D
I wonder if there is any special reason to start with this basis. Looks like you will not run out of work the next months. I hope your enthusiasm is sufficient.
You will find support here!

Hello Phil, and welcome to the forum. :D It's nice to have one more Z owner aboard.

By the look of your project it looks like it has suffered from the famous English winters. But as Volker said, hopefully we are able to give you the support you need to get the bike back on the road.

Thanks for the speedy welcome - good to find an active forum. I'm not planning on this project being a quick-fix you'll be glad to hear :) Plenty of inspiration already from looking at your bike Ibsen

Hi, Phil. Wow... looks like you caught that one just in time. Do they salt the winter roads in the UK? We have salt mines here in upstate NY and they use it on the roads like we'll never run out. I noticed three weeks ago in a rainstorm that the wash still tasted salty after a whole summer. It's not good for anything made of metal :x

Yep, plenty of salt, and it's been standing with the current owner for a couple of years. He bought it as a project, then got involved in a CB750 rebuild and a BMW restoration along the way.

Just think - it can only get better from here on ! come on now, be positive, be positive, be positive...

Yeah, welcome Phil. You certainly picked a rough diamond there :D

And Ibsen's machine is a testament to what we all strive for. I'm just looking to control my random oil leaks before I go after the cosmetic side though

When you finished, you will be a real CB650 expert who can claim that he knows every bolt of his bike!
Like that?

Just as an orientation for your calculation, I think one can still get a quite fine CB650 for below 2000Euros here.
But of course no one can pay for the feelings to ride a great bike you rebuild yourself. :)

Hi Phil! Nice one mate. Been a part of this forum for the a few months (check my profile) I'm in the UK too and I'm sure i saw this CB on e-bay a few weeks ago. Am I right? Wow, what a project! Mine was almost as...character building as yours is going to be - but the bulk of the work has been done. This lot are great and will bend over backwards to help. I need to post some pics on the forum - but Iv got some I could e-mail you with if you are interested. Mine's a black '79 as well by the way. Good luck and all the best. Oh PS - the CB 650 is a brilliant bike and I'm chuffed to bits with mine. I've had all sorts of machines, from tourers to customs to learners and mopeds. This beauty - though not as trendy as its bigger sister the 750 - is a little gem of a bike that is becoming a rarity - especially on UK roads these days. Fantastic that you have decided to restore thias one. can't wait to see what you get up too!

Thanks for the welcome. As I said in an earlier post it's good to find such an active forum. Plenty of help will be needed, so glad you're up for it. BTW, yes it was the one on ebay a few weeks ago.

regards, Phil

Hi phil. Thought it was. First thing I do is look at CB bits when i hit e-bay! Good luck with it. I'm doing the brakes on mine at the moment. Most other things have been tackled - except the engine itself, which apart from some oil seepage from the cylinder head, is solid - touch wood.

A pretty clean looking cover. they are getting harder to find so you gotta snag them while you can.
