1983 cb650 with 109k miles needs some TLC
So I am brand new to this forum and in need of some advice and guidance. I just bought a 1983 cb650 with 109 thousand miles!! I basically got the bike for free and it does run and drive. I need to do some regular maintainence things like oil change, plugs, air filter and front brake pads. The problem I'm having is when I run the bike for more than 30 min the clutch no longer disengages when the lever is pulled in. As it sits when cold I have to pull the lever all the way until it touches the handlebar to get the clutch to disengage and the clutch starts to grab when the lever is less then 1/2" from the bars. Until it's fully warmed up and then no longer disengages. From doing some digging around I have come up with Slave cylinder needing cleaned and rebuilt. I ordered a K-L rebuild kit already and am waiting shipment. My question is what do you guys think? Am I on the right track? Maybe master cylinder and clutch need rebuilt also? Bike runs great with plenty of power and no hesitation or weird noises. Also the clutch seems to grab very positively with no slip.

That is incredible mileage for any bike!

I know, it's waaaaaaay up there. But the bike still runs good. I just need to figure out this clutch issue...

I would rebuild both. no point in rebuilding the slave just to dump dirt from the master in it. That is amazing miles for a 650. You can always look for another to put you new rebuilt parts onto if this one goes south.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

No I didn't clean the tank, the guy I bought it from was putting about 6k miles a year on it and just stoped riding it October. Am I on the right path for this issue? Or is there something I didn't think of that could cause the clutch to act like that?

I figure if it runs around for another year or two I would donate it to Honda to be out on display somewhere!!! They really built a top notch motorcycle with this one. Must be a Tuesday or Thursday bike!

I'm not really familiar with the hydraulic clutch setup of the Nighthawk CB650SC, so I can't really give too much advice on that. It would be hard to go wrong by rebuilding both the master and slave cylinders.

So a very noob question but the drain plug for the oil, is it the flat Allen head bolt on the front left side of the bike if you were sitting on it? Also I have found that Rotella works well in these old Honda motorcycles. What oil do you guys run and what filter ?
Re: 1983 cb650 with 109k miles needs some TLC
I use rotella also. The plug should be on the bottom but not sure. Never had a DOHC on the road. I do have a 84 parts bike .

It looks like the oil drain plug is the same place as the SOHC bikes--bottom of the oil pan.

Rotella here too. Anything JASO-MA (I think that's right) will work on the clutch. I have used Castrol as well, no problems, just a bit pricy and small containers.

I am not much of a mechanic, but could your clutch problem be that the clutch cable needs adjustment?
Re: 1983 cb650 with 109k miles needs some TLC
dohc 650's had a hydraulic clutch
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!
