Stator issues/replacement

Postby CPowell1994 » Fri Feb 16, 2018 7:12 pm

Holy balls! Found my charging issue. Was just going to replace outer stator. Ordering a new rotor and gasket now.

I think that would probably be the best option

It's pretty grotty  New rotor and gasket should be here Tuesday. Then I'll finally fire it up and roll around the yard (needs new tires before it's on the road). I'm looking at the Bridgestone Battle-ax BT45s, Pirelli Sport Demons, and Pirelli Night Dragons. Anyone run these tires?

Yeah, that's pretty bad. You find that you need a new regulator/rectifier as well. A bad rotor can burn it out. :(

What would be the symptoms of a bad regulator/rectifier?

Sadly, the same as what you were already experiencing--failure to charge. :(

So I should order the regulator? I mean, the bike runs and everything works, just doesn't keep the battery charged.

If you've got the time to try it with the new rotor and stator, I'd wait.

BTW, did you test the current rotor and stator? I've seem some ugly ones that cleaned up nicely and still worked.

I'll try it with the new ones when I get them. The PO said that he had tested them and they were no good. Considering that, then seeing the condition they were in, I didn't bother testing and just decided to order new ones. One problem I'm dealing with now is getting the screws out that hold the stator in the cover. Someone was in here before me and buggered them up. I assume I need a good set of jis drivers. I have a couple jis bits, but neither are a perfect fit and they try to strip.

I usually try an impact driver right from the start. I find these screws are a pain in the ass under the best of circumstances.

Well I stripped one of the stator screws. Gonna try a stripped screw removal kit or helicoil.

So I finally got around to using my extractor kit. Still can't get any screws out. Is there a trick to this?? I don't want to have to buy a new cover and everything just because I couldn't get three screws out. I'm tempted to just bust the stator up so I can get some vice grips in there. Don't necessarily want to do that though.

You can make a very effective penetrating lubricant out of a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF transmission fluid. Put some of this on it and let it sit for a bit. Sadly, on the CB650 I rebuilt, I never was able to get those screws free. :(

CP, you can try the flat blade screwdriver/chisel method, you need an old flat blade screwdriver that has the metal going all the way through the handle. You place the screwdriver on one part of the cross head but right to the edge of the screw, hold the screwdriver vertical and hit it with a hammer, the idea is to chisel a notch into the screw head, this may take a few hits to get a sufficient notch. Then you place the screwdriver blade in the notch at an angle, about 60 degrees, in the direction the screw undoes, then hit the screwdriver with the hammer. Here is a vid of a guy doing it but his camera work is pretty bad, but so is my description, between this guy and myself you may get the idea

I should also add, do it on a work bench not on a concrete floor or you'll scratch the hell out of the casing  don't ask me how I know  An extra pair of hands may come in useful to hold the case steady while you hit the screwdriver.
